I won't be revealing any spoilers, but I recently watched The Hunger Games and found it very moving.
Self-sacrifice is a very dominant theme throughout the movie. And something about the various ways in which that theme played out gripped me at every turn. But why is this kind of drama so compelling? What is it that resonates within us when we read or watch a story of loving sacrifice?

Recently in an travel article for the New York times, Eric Weiner wrote an thought-provoking piece on "thin places" - those places which he has come across in his travels where he felt a sense of the divine. These are places which inspire, mystify, and "unmask" us. They are diverse and sometimes unexpected. They are beautiful, tranquil, stunning, and awe-inspiring. No two seem to alike, except in their ability to bring him to an internal feeling of transcendence.
